Cavatelli Italian Trattoria has not been open for business long (a few months to be exact), but it already feels like a cherished neighborhood restaurant. Located in the Roads neighborhood between Coral Gables and Brickell Avenue, Cavatelli’s offers a gourmet dining experience for a bargain price.
From the bread that is brought before your meal to the sinful house desserts, Cavatelli offers wonderful food. All ingredients are supremely fresh – usually bought the very same day. Fresh food makes a huge difference in taste and texture — especially with seafood – and there’s plenty on the menu.
A perfect of example of the restaurant’s superior treatment of seafood dishes is the mussel appetizer, Mejillones del Chef ($8.50). The mussels are quickly sautéed in white wine with onions and parsley, resulting in a fresh, delectable representation of the meaty mollusks.
Of course, you can’t dine at an Italian restaurant without having some pasta. Cavatelli Famosi ($12.50) is a combination of pasta, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese, fresh basil leaves, and a flavorful cream sauce. The pasta is perfectly cooked and the dish is filling without being overwhelming.
If you want something a tad more robust, try the Veal Milanesa alla Parmiggiana ($14.95), a veal steak, tenderized and breaded to perfection with a light savory crust, then topped with tomato and parmesan cheese.
Each entrée comes with a side dish and you can include in any of the following: sautéed vegetables, grilled asparagus (which is delightful), rosemary potatoes, salad, or malfatti ricotta and spinach.
The Chocolat Marquisse ($4.95) mousse is the way to go for chocoholics in search of dessert. Rich, smooth and bursting with chocolate, each bite proves that a little can go a long way.
During peak lunch and dinner hours, it may be difficult to get a table and find street parking, but for a gourmet meal at these prices, it’s worth circling the block a few times.
