You won’t find any burritos or nachos on the menu at Talavera Cocina Mexicana in Coral Gables. That’s because their specialty is gourmet Southern Mexican cuisine from regions such as Oaxaca, Puebla and Jalisco.
What you will find are delicate, flavorful dishes prepared fresh and without overbearing spiciness. In fact, most of the dishes are not spicy at all, but there are red and green add-on sauces you can use to turn up the heat.
Break away from the weekend routine and stop by Talavera for a unique brunch. Try the Huevos Rancheros ($11), the most popular Mexican breakfast dish in the U.S. And they do a beautiful job! Two poached eggs on a tortilla topped with a zesty salsa and served with a side of refried beans and thick toast slices for dipping.
Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., they feature lunch specials for $13 that include an entrée, homemade chips and salsa, choice of flat or sparkling water, or Hibiscus Iced Tea, and Fruit Sorbet.
Specialties include Mexico City Beef Tacos ($18); Ceviches ($11 – $18); Huarache (choice of meat or grilled veggies on a handmade corn dough, $14 – $24), and a variety of Mole dishes (smothered in sauce made with chili peppers and Mexican chocolate, $20 – $24); and more.
Named after a type of fine pottery from the city of Puebla, Talavera brings to life the art form with earthy, burnt orange-colored walls, splashes of yellow and cobalt blue swirls. The restaurant serves as a sort of gallery too, displaying large planters and other pottery items that are for sale.
Classy, yet casual and friendly, Talavera will take you down a less-traveled road to authentic Mexican cuisine. Hop on, it’s a nice ride.
