Blissful Food Down to the Crumbs

When you first walk into Crumb on Parchment, it’s like you’ve discovered a country retreat hidden amid the upscale shops around this stealthy, pop-up restaurant. And then the smell of fresh-baked pastries lures you toward the chalk-written menu where you uncover the real gem: blissful comfort food.

Crumb is Chef Michelle Bernstein’s latest gastronomical venture. Nestled within the creative energy that is the Design District and inside the lobby of the 3930 building, this café and bakery shop is cozy and warm, channeling an inner shabby chic vibe that’s uber cool.

I’ve tried several menu items, and my personal favorite is the Crumb Turkey Sandwich ($8.25) that consists of tender turkey, cheddar and lettuce served on a pretzel roll. That’s right, a pretzel roll. It’s the perfect combination of salt and butter, crunch and softness.

This is the type of perfection that makes Bernstein such a celebrated chef. The chicken potpie ($10) is also a favorite, tossing aside the traditional crust for a crispy texture that is a healthier option. Bragging rights also go to the Pulled Rotisserie Chicken sandwich ($9), served with caramelized onion, arugula, goat cheese and apples (or pears). It doesn’t get much better than this for sandwich lovers.

Crumb also offers a wide selection of breakfast items, from homemade granola to The Breakfastwich, which is made with fluffy eggs and kale, chicken-apple sausage, and melted cheddar between toasted butter. This might be the perfect way to kick start the morning.

Menu items also include homemade soups, “warm and messy hot sandwiches” and a variety of homemade, fresh salads. The menu goodies don’t stop there; this bakery serves up a selection of baked pastries using 100 percent butter, like whole-wheat chocolate chip cookies and rum cake that left me feeling happy – maybe a little too happy.

In addition to lunch, this little corner of heaven on earth serves breakfast all day. The downside: Crumb on Parchment is only open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Prices range from $4.50 to $15.75.

  1. I’ve been wanting to visit Crumb on Parchment for a while now, but work all day! I hope they’re open the next time I have off for a long holiday weekend.
