You can throw a stone from any street corner in Miami and hit a Cuban restaurant, but Mexican restaurants are a bit more difficult to locate, especially one serving authentic Mexican food that’s fresh and at reasonable prices.
El Rancho Grande, located right on Kendall Drive, is such a place. The only problem is trying to decide what to order! The locale’s attention to detail is unmistakable even in its menu, which is full of vivid, full-color pictures – this is where the teasing of your palate begins.
Then come the homemade chips and salsa – a veritable treat, and it’s evident the chips are made fresh for each guest. Since we were having such difficulty deciding on one dish, we went with the Plato Mexicano ($15.95), which brings a sampling of traditional Mexican favorites, such as mole poblano, cochinito pibil, cheese chile relleno, chicken enchiliada, rice, and refried beans.
You can taste the savory freshness in every bite. The Mexican rice and refried beans, often overlooked at most places, were treated well here with the right amount of seasoning and preparation to make them stand out from the competition.
The chicken enchilada, mole poblano and cochinito pibil were all enjoyable, but the surprising standout was the cheese chile relleno – a perfectly cooked, tender green pepper stuffed with cheese and surrounded by sauce. Each bite was a delight.
Sometimes service can make or break a restaurant. At El Rancho Grande, the exquisite service was like ice cream on top of an already delicious cake. We were catered to by our server as well as the bus boy, who both kept checking on us to make sure our drinks were filled and that we were enjoying our meal.
Overall, this is a fabulous place to take the family or a group of friends and enjoy real, down home Mexican food at reasonable prices in a very pleasant atmosphere.
