Wasabi Turns Up the Heat in Pembroke Pines

By Melanie Garcia

Nestled within the hustle and bustle of a busy Pembroke Pines plaza, Wasabi West is the kind of culinary jewel that you might miss if you’re not on the lookout. It’s small and cozy, serving some of the best Sushi in South Florida. Aptly named Wasabi, the food is sure to spice up your day.

The family-friendly restaurant has an eight-page menu with a myriad of appetizers, soups, seafood, sashimi, and rice and noodle options. Sushi rolls are their specialty, and the menu offers about 60 different types to choose from.

You can go down the traditional path, with choices such as California Roll ($6.95), Rainbow Roll ($9.95) or Shrimp Tempura Roll ($9.95). If you’re feeling a little adventurous, Wasabi’s Hollywood selection pays tribute to celebrity icons. Try the Elvis Roll is made with snow crab, avocado, cucumber and is topped with masago ($15.95), or Madonna Roll – eel, asparagus, avocado, and roe wrapped in datemaki ($10.95).

We started things off with steamy bowls of miso soup ($2.50) and edamame ($5.95), boiled soybeans that were perfectly salted. On this particular visit, we tried one of the Chef’s Specials, the Dragon Roll ($11.95), and indulged in tempura shrimp, cucumber, avocado, asparagus, topped with avocado and roe and finished off with two cherries to represent the dragon’s eyes.

A new addition to the menu, the Anthony Roll ($14.95), was spectacular. Prepared with tuna, salmon, whitefish, cream cheese, carrot, and avocado, wrapped in pink low calorie seaweed, it was light yet satisfying. The combination of flavors was delightful.

Wasabi West and Wasabi East (its sister location) both offer lunch specials and combos. It should also be noted that the service at Wasabi West was fantastic, and if you frequent the restaurant as much as we do, the staff starts treating you like family. They’ll remember your name, your favorite dish and make you feel right at home.

You’ll want to arrive early for dinner on the weekends, as this charming restaurant is usually packed with locals who flock to indulge in some seriously good sushi.
