Taste the Love at Soya e Pomodoro

At Soya e Pomodoro, where the sign outside reads “Simple Food Made With Love,” you will find aromatic soups, homemade marinara sauce poured over tender eggplant, crusty paninis, creamy pastas, and more.

This real deal Italian bistro in the heart of downtown Miami is incredibly romantic, with an artsy, bohemian soul. The concrete and brick walls are painted with murals and showcase art for sale. The two dining rooms are big open spaces and there is no A/C, so this is the best time of the year to visit. There are mismatched tables and chairs, a big comfy couch and bookshelves filled with wonderful reads. Among the restaurant’s most charming qualities, the staff runs around speaking Italian all the time, so it feels like a mini trip to Italy.

We stopped by for lunch on a weekday. There are always daily specials, most under $12. The Melanzane alla Parmigiana (Eggplant Parmesan, $10.75) is absolutely amazing. This delicate yet satisfying dish is made with baked layers of eggplant, fresh mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and tomato sauce. Another tantalizing choice is the Saltimbocca di Pollo ($12.50) – chicken breast layered with prosciutto and smoke mozzarella served over roasted potatoes and vegetables. All entrées come with a small house salad drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette.

For a lighter fare, try one of their wonderful paninis, such as the Melinda ($8.75), a breaded chicken breast topped with mozzarella, tomatoes and arugula. You can order it on Ciabatta bread or a baguette (we recommend Ciabatta).

No Italian meal is complete without dessert and espresso, which comes in a cute little cup with saucer and biscotti. Desserts ($5-$7) include Crème Brule, Tiramisu, Pannacotta, Tartufo (Italian ice cream dessert), and more! Enjoy live music on the weekends.
