The secret, homemade basting sauce and Blackjack Oaks used for grilling at the Pit Bar-B-Q on Tamiami Trail makes for some sweet, succulent and smoky fare.
“This is certainly not your regular everyday barbecue sauce,” says Elena ZelicsKovics of Coral Gables. “I love the savory and smoky combination.”
The Pit is good old fashioned barbecue in a rustic and western setting. In fact, they boast being the only “real wood burning pit” in Miami. Dine indoors or out, but you may want to bask in the breeze under one of their newly-built chickee huts for an authentic feel.
You’ll know you’re near the Everglades with one glance at the menu. The first three listings under starters are Gator Bites ($11.99), Frog Legs ($13.99) and Conch Fritters ($7.99).
The Pit’s original owner, Tommy Little, passed away last October, but newcomers Sonia and Michael Gonzalez are keeping the legacy that started in 1965 alive. They have also added a little Latin flare to the menu.
They are best known for their oh-so-tender, fall-off-the-bone meaty ribs ($10.99) and freshly made sides ($2.50), including a tangy slaw, super sweet baked beans, fry biscuits, and corn on the cob.
New menu items include Churrasco steak ($14.99) and Pork Chunk ($8.99) platters, a shrimp basket ($11.99), Moro rice, yucca with mojo, tostones, and tamales.
The Pit also grills burgers, made with beef ($7.99), gator ($9.99) and veggie ($7.99). Spicy Gator Sausage is also available.
They also offer a la carte family-sized meals starting at $6.99 for half a chicken or BBQ pork tidbits. Spare ribs, pulled pork and sliced beef are other options. And sides come in pint, quart and gallon sizes.
Friday’s Biker Night kicks off the weekend with dancing, food and drink. With $4 beer specials, live music, and pony rides every weekend, a family visit to The Pit is a treat for everyone!
Don’t leave without trying a slice of their homemade Key Lime Pie. And remember to tell them you heard The Pit on Great Food List.
