Dubbed the “best Mexican food north of the border” on their menu, Taco Rico Tex-Mex Café is right on the money. No bell or Chihuahua needed here.
The Coral Gables locale is a city staple and new locations have popped up on Miami Beach, Doral and Pinecrest. This joint is small, yet cozy, casual and laid back with a fair amount of colorful Mexican hats, maracas, cactus, and chili peppers for décor.
The mouth-watering starters (starting at $4.99) consist of tried and true classics, from chili con queso to jalapeño poppers, loaded nachos, quesadillas, and taquitos. Their spicy tomato-based tortilla soup with crispy tortilla strips ($2.99 for a cup) is amazing. And there is always your choice of another scrumptious homemade soup of the day.
Lunch specials are available seven days a week (starting at $5.49) from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and include rice, beans, chips, and salsa.
You can’t go wrong with one of their combination platters or Taco Rico bowls (starting at $7.99). The bowls come in Tex-Mex or Baja Chicken, or strictly veggie.
Everything is made to order and regulars rave about the carne asada with grilled onions ($11.29) and fajitas (starting at $9.99). Fajitas come in chicken, steak, shrimp, or combination, and they offer a vegetarian option.
Their burritos, wet burritos with enchilada sauce and melted cheese (starting at $5.75) are extremely popular. Enchiladas ($8.49) and quesadillas (starting at $6.29) round out the menu. Add a bit of spice to your meal with a visit to their salsa bar complete with atomic, aji, chilpotle, verde, and pico de gallo.
Taco Rico serves homemade sangria ($4.25) and ice cold beer (draft $3.20/bottle $3.48). Their frozen drinks (starting at $3.50) include strawberry-banana, mango and a frosty margarita. Mexican sodas ($2.13) in tamarind, mandarin, lime, or pineapple are also refreshing options.
Leave room for dessert. The sopapillas ($2.99), deep fried pastries coated in cinnamon and dipped in honey, will have you dreaming of your next visit.
Monday is Taco Madness with 79-cent tacos (beef or bean/hard or soft). Pick up a frequent diner’s card and every visit’s punch puts you closer to a free meal.
Forget the border and run to Taco Rico! And remember to tell them that you heard about them on greatfoodlist.com
