There’s something mysterious and almost magical about the town of Miami Springs. Tucked away from the chaos and busy streets of Miami, this neighborhood maintains the calm and charm of small town America. When we visited the area for a good meal, we didn’t hesitate to dine at Holleman’s, a family-friendly restaurant with great service, reasonable prices and delicious comfort food reminiscent of its quiet neighborhood.
The friendly waitress gave us a warm welcome and then told us about the daily specials, that although not part of the menu, sounded too good to pass up on. We ordered the Stuffed Portabello Mushroom ($11.99), which had crab cake filling and melted blue cheese sprinkled with caramelized sauce. It was outstanding; the mixture of bold cheese flavors topped with the crab cake and sweet sauce drizzle were a combination that we weren’t familiar with but would surely welcome more often.
While enjoying our appetizers with our glasses of wine (Holleman’s has an impressive and affordable variety) we proceeded to order our main courses – the NY Strip ($25.95) a 14 oz. NY strip cooked to your specification in an open frame grille and accompanied by your choice of a side. Our steak was cooked as ordered, seasoned delicately, tender and flavorful. Equally as appetizing was the side of mashed potatoes that still had remnants of the skin to add flavor and texture. Other sides to choose from also include, sautéed spinach, grilled asparagus and au gratin potatoes, among many more.
With a meat dish under our belt, we also tried a poultry dish, the Sweet and Spicy Cashew Chicken Dish ($15.95). This chicken dish was cooked in a gingery, spicy soy sauce giving it an authentic Asian flair that was delightful and bold. The extensive menu also offers choices in small plates, seafood, pasta and a wide selection of sandwiches for lunch.
Finally, like any good meal that must come to an end, we ordered the Crème Brulée ($6.75) for dessert and were pleasantly surprised. It was not too eggy but rather had a consistent sugary top base and creamy vanilla custard filling. It was the perfect end to our fulfilling dinner.
Holleman’s also hosts several events including Karaoke Friday nights with drink and food specials, and the restaurant also rents out its entertaining space for special occasions like birthdays and wedding rehearsal dinners.
