Chandler’s Place serves up fresh, exciting, and nothing-ever-fried fanfare to those working or visiting Coral Gables.
“I always wanted to own a little place like this,” says Chandler Rivera, who worked around the corner at the old school haunt the Hofbrau for 32 years. Hence the name Chandler’s Place, so that her clientele could easily find her when she opened in early 2012.
Made up of just two tables and a small counter, the only thing big here is their taste and friendly hospitality. The message “Welcome — May all who enter as guests, leave as friends” is prominently featured on their wall and that will surely sum up your visit.
Tiny and quaint, the place is filled with art from local artists, children’s art on the side of the fridge, and inspirational quotes and messages. You’ll feel like you’ve snuck home to play hooky the second you walk in the door.
The menu is traditional with some twists and new takes on old favorites. Chef James Fox is always trying out something new. You can check out the Specials board and usually try a sample, if you’re having a hard time making a decision.
Breakfast is hard to find in the Gables, but their small breakfast selection (starting @ $2.00) is perfect for starting the day and those on the go. Choose between a bagel, croissant, omelette, fresh fruit with yogurt and granola, or a latin breakfast.
This family-run eatery has quite an internet following . Most ratings are five stars and they rave about the food and service. Rivera’s girls are usually running in and out delivering the takeout orders.
Their exquisite soups (starting @ $3.00) are a must. You can’t go wrong with the chicken basil with rice, pumpkin with a hint of ginger, split pea, lentil, or vegetarian garbanzo.
The menu includes a large array of sandwiches, wraps, tacos and quesadillas. A Sloppy Joe or Chicken Cordon Bleu Croissant are amazing picks. (All items listed between $5.95 and $8.95)
Pasta salad and cole slaw are the staple sides. But regulars come back for the garbanzo and cold yucca salads. They serve small to large salads between $3.95 and $6.95, for more healthier offerings.
By all means don’t forget dessert. Rivera used to supply the baked goods to the previous owners of the space. Flan, Key Lime & Guava Key Lime Pie, Bread Pudding, Cheesecake, Brownies, and Rum Cake all are deliciously delectable.
Chandler’s Place is a small oasis nestled between the hustle and bustle of some big banks and offices. This easy to miss jewel is just off the corner of Ponce de Leon and Alhambra Circle. Don’t blink- You may pass it up. But once you find it, you won’t forget it!
